The regional director of Ducks Unlimited for Nevada/Arizona, Shay Byars, has been charged with illegally shooting a swan in a closed area not open to swan hunting at Ruby Marshes in Elko County, after an inquiry into the incident was expressed by HUNTER'S ALERT.

The incident was witnessed by an informer. The suspect fled the scene of the shooting and upon questioning, has denied any role in the incident.

Dear Mr. Bentley:

I am requesting a written response to the letter you sent to Steve Thompson on September 21, 2007 pertaining to the Desert National Wildlife Refuge (DNWR). The loss of our desert bighorn sheep in this area was brought to light 19 years ago by HUNTER’S ALERT. Why did it take the Wildlife Commission or NDOW so long to act?

I read with interest your article in the Reno Gazette Journal, January 25, 2008, concerning Nevada's declining deer population.

I recently read an article in the Tonopah Times Bonanza & Goldfield News about a black bear that was found wandering around Goldfield eating what it could find.  The bear spent the night on the porch of a local judge's house until someone called the Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) and an officer was sent from Reno to capture the bear.  That is nothing out of the ordinary for this area if you don't count the fact that an NDOW officer responded in a timely manner. ...

In the 2001 Legislative session, HUNTER'S ALERT, working with Nevada Hunters Association and Assemblyman Jerry Claborn were successful in passing Assembly Bill 291. This bill enacted a $3.00 predator fee for every big game tag that hunters applied for. It should be noted that no other so-called sportsmen's organization helped in the passage of this bill which was desperately needed to restore our deer.

If a lion is caught in a trap, NDOW expects the trapper to throw his coat over the lion and then proceed to release the lion. Hard to believe, but true.

A mountain lion was spotted in the McCullough Range during the last sheep season. Get ready for the extermination of sheep in that area. What will the sheep clubs, NDOW or the Wildlife Commission which is loaded with sheep club members, do about this? Absolutely nothing! So, as usual, let the lions wipe out the sheep in yet another area. So much for these people caring about the desert bighorn sheep.

Remember you read it first in HUNTER’S ALERT! For the last five years, the excuse for the declining Nevada deer population has been wildfires. The next excuse will be the bad winter of 2007-2008. Of course, predators will never be mentioned.

"We have got to get more kids involved in hunting." This is a saying that you have heard many times in recent years. Recent data from the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service indicates that hunter numbers in the United States declined 10 % between 1996 and 2006. This statistic points out a need for us to act now to stem this decline of young hunters.
