NDOW OUT OF CONTROL!
I have read many horror stories committed by NDOW but I never thought that I would be a target of one of their Gestapo tactics. In September, 20011 received a phone call from Nevada Division of Wildlife. They wanted to talk with me about another individual who was possibly involved with a dead sheep found in the Arrow Mountains. I agreed to speak with them. Unbeknownst to me, they were already on my property when they called. They arrived at my door within moments. They questioned me for 45 minu... Read More >> |

Another Bad Appointment to the Wildlife Commission
It is the governor who makes the appointments to the Wildlife Commission. But Kenny Guinn relied on current commissioners for their suggestions on a nominee. It resulted in appointing Clint Bentley who was not the most qualified person. The person most qualified for this post was Wilford Allen. Read More >> |

NDOW CONDUCTS ELK SLAUGHTER!!
How much more mismanagement is NDOW going to do before the governor, Mike Turnipseed (NDOW boss) or the Wildlife Commission who set policy for NDOW do something to change NDOW's direction? NDOW continually blames their mismanagement on wildfires, drought and bad winters. This one is hard to blame on Mother Nature. Read More >> |

Attention All Sportsmen
Hunting and fishing is big business in the country. The most recent five-year survey by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service found that the nation's 13 million hunters age 16 or older spent 17.5 days on average in the field last year. For the 34 million U.S. anglers, that number was 16 days. On average, hunters spent $1,585 apiece on gear and trips, while anglers lightened their wallets to the tune of $1,046 each. Total spending by sportsmen in 2001: $55 Billion! Read More >> |

Why we need predator control
Last issue, HUNTER'S ALERT told you about a federal government agency called Wildlife Services. They do predator control, something NDOW refuses to do. The person calling the shots in NDOW must have been absent from biology class in high school. He failed to learn that coyotes were put on this earth to control rodents such as mice and rabbits, not eat the newborn fawn deer and antelope or domestic calves and lambs. NDOW must like the carnage on the defenseless newborn animals and their slow ... Read More >> |

Truth about air operations
Finally, someone in NDOW has the guts to stand up and say our air operations are being diminished. According to Dave Rice, NDOW biologists have finally admitted what HUNTER'S ALERT has been saying for years. Read More >> |

A good idea...but it won't happen.
Every year the Board of Regents does a performance evaluation on school presidents. How about every year doing a performance evaluation on the administrator of NDOW? The Wildlife commissioners need to realize that the best thing you can do for the future is to look back to the past. Read More >> |

Our Readers Reply
Re: Hunter's Alert Summer Issue I was horrified to read the article in the above-referenced newsletter about the Nevada Division of Wildlife game warden (Roddy Shepard) who couldn't bring himself to function in an emergency situation involving a ram who had been severely injured by a motor vehicle on the roadway. EDITORIAL
As the old saying goes, for every action there is a reaction. Sportsmen enjoy a fair big game tag draw. Why? Who is responsible for the Nevada Duck Stamp? We have more sportsmen on the Wildlife Commission than we have ever had. At last, there is money for predator control. Who is responsible for this? These good things for sportsmen did not happen all by themselves. All of these actions and many more that have helped hunters are because of Gerald Lent. It all started in 1978 when Reno optometris... Read More >> |

TIME TO VOTE
Listed below are the candidates that HUNTER'S ALERT is endorsing for the General Election on Tuesday, November 5, 2002. These candidates were selected because they have supported hunters or gun ownership. None of them have paid a fee to HUNTER'S ALERT for their endorsement. Please consider voting for these candidates as they will hold the future of hunting in the state of Nevada. Read More >> |

NDOW-Another failed audit
If NDOW were as good at predator control as they are at failed audits, predators would not be a problem in our state. NDOW never had an audit they couldn't fail. The most recent was another case of mismanagement which is hard to blame on drought, wildfires and bad winters. Read More >> |

NDOW Doubts Predator Control works??
When it comes to predator control, NDOW prefers to do nothing or to make excuses. Whichever one they use, they excel at both. In the Las Vegas Review Journal (July 31, 2002) NDOW's Conservation Education Bureau Chief Kelly Clark said "If hunters had been allowed to take more deer, then we would not have had this mortality this spring. We need to reduce numbers in order to have habitat that's strong and keep the herd viable." Can you believe this ridiculous statement? With what ... Read More >> |

ATTENTION SPORTSMEN!!
In Assembly District 35 If you want hunting and fishing to get better, you need to put Marcia de Braga out to pasture. Any legislative wildlife bill that originates in the assembly must go to the Natural Resources Committee. She is the chairperson of that committee. Last session, Assembly Bill 494 would have done two things. First, it would take Nevada Division of Wildlife (NDOW) from under the jurisdiction of the Department of Conservation and Natural Resource. This department has seven state ag... Read More >> |

More predator news that NDOW won't believe
Below are excerpts from the November, 1998 Field & Stream Magazine: THE STORY THE MAP TOLD WAS PLAIN TO SEE: WHERE THE BIG CATS THRIVED, DEER DID NOT By John Barsness Recently I sat through an all-day meeting where a series of speakers explained the wonders they'd discovered in the wild world. After lunch we were all nodding off when a senior biologist from the game department of a Western state woke us up. "Here's a map of deer distribution, according to our latest surveys." ... PRESENTED TO THE CLARK COUNTY ADVISORY BOARD TO MANAGE WILDLIFE
JUNE 19, 2002 I am proposing that when a person buys a hunting license, there will be a punch-out spot on the license to validate that a mountain lion has been harvested. Currently when a person harvests a mountain lion, he must report it to NDOW within 72 hours. This would remain in effect and at that time, the person harvesting the mountain lion must pay the lion harvest fee. Read More >> |

NDOW STRETCHES THE TRUTH.
One of NDOW's guiding principles is Obey the Law and Tell the Truth. With this in mind, NDOW recently distributed some new propaganda entitled Promises Kept. One of them was Predator Management Program. Is this a whopper or what? NDOW refused to do any predator management until last legislative session when AB291 was signed into law. In other words, it had to be made into law before NDOW would act. Forget about "promises kept" on this issue. Read More >> |

Unbeknownst to me, they were already on my property when they called. They arrived at my door within moments. They questioned me for 45 minutes at which time I asked "Do you think I did it?" They responded that I was not only a suspect, but the suspect. Knowing that I had nothing to hide, I answered all questions. I showed them all of my guns and ammunition. They were offered the opportunity to take any of them that they chose to take. They looked over the truck for my tire tread. "Yeah, this is the only one." was their comment to each other. This truck with these tires had not been in the Arrow Mountains within that time frame, (the last 6 months) |
