A GOVERNOR WHO CARES ABOUT SPORTSMEN

For a decade, sportsmen had a governor who was not concerned about their issues. It was akin to Rome burning while Nero fiddled. Translated, our deer numbers were declining while Governor Miller and Wildlife administrator Willie Molini did nothing about it. (except blame Mother Nature) Fortunately for sportsmen and our natural resource both of them have been put out to pasture and now the long process of rebuilding has begun.

EDITORIAL

HUNTER S ALERT has been very successful in past legislative sessions. This is due to the many senators and assemblymen and assemblywomen who have supported sportsmen s concerns. Without their efforts, many sportsmen s bills would not have become law.

Like it or not, sportsmen are in a chess game with the antihunting groups. By being passive, sportsmen will accomplish nothing. The antis are not passive. Quite the contrary, they are coming at us continually from all directions. It is for this reaso...

Another Disgusted Sportsman!

We read with interest every issue of Hunter s Alert as my wife and I are long time avid deer hunters in northeastern Nevada. I must say that we are also disgusted with the downward spiral NDOW has been in for at least the past ten years to the gross detriment of especially the magnificent deer herds in our part of Nevada. Living at the base of the Ruby Mountains this past ten years, winter ranging deer spend nearly six months physically in our yard at the house, light and heavy winters. This up ...

More Good News!

Pete Morros, director of Conservation and Natural Resources has announced his resignation effective August 1, 2000. This is a person who had been in government much too long. (38 years)

We informed our readers in the Summer, 1999 issue how Pete Morros neglected sportsmen for years. We also told you in our last issue how bad Pete Morros was as illustrated by direct quotes from the July, 1999 Wildlife Commission meeting.

Let’s not overlook the fact that not one sportsmen s organization in the ...

Sportsmen Speak! Summer 2000

We have had literally thousands of comments from sportsmen, mainly on predator control. Remember the two thousand comments sent to the Wildlife commissioners? These comments fell on the deaf ears of Bob Miller s Wildlife Commission. We only have eleven more months left of their do nothing about predator philosophy. Rest assured Kenny Guinn s appointments will listen when sportsmen speak.

Think About It

When you remove the cattle from the land, which is what the environmentalists want, the grass grows. When there is a lot of grass, especially dead grass, it is easier for a wild fire to start. Simply put, no cows, more grass, more fires. Haven t we had a lot more fires in recent years? Shouldn’t some of the blame for all these wild fires be attributed to the cattle-free greenies who want to protect the forest?

A Word from New Wildlife Commissioner John Moran

My first meeting as a Wildlife commissioner for our state was both enlightening and rewarding. My family and I have had the privilege of living in Nevada since the late 1940 s and in attending the recent meeting in Ely I had the opportunity to meet many dedicated outdoorsmen who not only value but also protect our important natural resources. The many people I saw and spoke with give unselfishly of their time and have a real personal commitment to the preservation, continuation, and well-being o...

A message from new Wildlife commissioner Tommy Ford

I am deeply grateful to be appointed to the Wildlife Commission. I want to thank Governor Kenny Guinn for having the confidence in me to select me for this very important position. I feel very fortunate to represent the sportsmen and sportswomen of Nevada.

I have lived in Nevada for fifty years, five years in Washoe County and the past forty five years in Clark County. I am very aware of the good, the bad and the ugly of wildlife issues in our state. I will do my best to see that sportsmen s agen...

Another NDOW Survey

Surveys are compiled for many reasons and much can be learned from them. NDOW did a survey in 1994. The results of this survey were compiled by NDOW. Of course, the results of this survey were never made public. One can only assume that there were more negative comments than positive about NDOW so the results were never released.

Good News Bad News

Good news for Nevada sportsmen! HUNTER'S ALERT has been waiting to write a report like this for over 20 years. Sportsmen now have 5 (the majority) good Wildlife commissioners on the Board. A very nasty Wildlife Commission meeting was held on August 14 and 15 in Elko. The bighorn sheep people did everything they could to see that Gerald Lent was not re-elected as chairman. Thankfully, the sheep people were defeated.

Gerald Lent is in the process of forming a Mule Deer Task Force committee. The intent of this committee is to facilitate input from concerned deer hunters. For that reason, we are requesting that everyone with an idea or suggestion to bring back our deer to submit it to the committee chair, Scott Raine. He can be reached at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it or PO Box 812, Eureka, NV 89316.  All ideas will be considered and I can assure you that some will be presented to the Wildlife Commission for implementation.

Past and current directors and NDOW biologists have done nothing to bring back our deer so it is going to be up to this Wildlife Commission to implement some changes. At last the general public is going to have some direct input. Please pass this information on to your fellow hunters as the committee wants as many suggestions as possible.

Thank you for your support of HUNTER'S ALERT. We are working for ALL of the sportsmen of Nevada to preserve and protect our hunting heritage.

Listed below are recommendations sent to Commissioner Raine by HUNTER'S ALERT.

Dear Commissioner Raine:

HUNTER'S ALERT is pleased that someone with some authority has finally realized that we have lost our deer and actually wants to do something to address this loss. For that reason, HUNTER'S ALERT is listing five suggestions which we hope you will consider.

1.     Replace the current director with someone who wants to bring back our deer.

2.     Managing mountain lions is a state right. The mountain lion should be returned to predator status without any federal repercussions. The threat of withholding P-R money goes against the Tenth Amendment of the Constitution. P-R money should be given to states with no strings attached.

3.     If number 2 is unattainable, insure the objective harvest of mountain lions is accomplished every year.

4.     No killing of does until deer numbers are at 200,000 statewide.

5.     More emphasis on predator control.
