NDOW.. ..NO MORE LIES!

You can learn a lot hanging around a taxidermy shop, and rightfully so. For it is the sportsmen who spend thousands of hours in the field every year. They are not biologists but they do know what they see or in the case of this article, what they haven't seen. Sportsmen are not willing to take NDOW's word for the loss of our deer any longer.

HUNTER'S ALERT has lost three of its loyal supporters in the last year. All three had something in common: they all wanted to see the return of our deer herds.

NDOW would fail NRA test

At the 2001 NRA (National Rifle Association) Annual meeting, First Vice President Kayne B. Robinson gave a speech which contained the following: "Fish and game agencies should be graded on how friendly they are to hunters and gun owners. Agencies should be graded on the expansion of shooting areas, areas devoid of red tape. They should be judged by restrictions removed, closed roads and bridges opened, costs lowered, and numbers of hunters increased and game available."

Vegas Valley Regional Shooting Park

Moccasin Road, Turn North at the Decatur Exit of North Beltway

The 2880 acre parcel of land for this proposed World Class Shooting Facility will soon be passed to Clark County ownership. Jim Gibbons, John Ensign and Harry Reid are the sponsors of the legislation that makes this possible. Congress has already passed the Gibbons Bill and the Senate will soon follow with a vote on the sure to pass Ensign-Reid Bill. The interest level of our Clark County Commissioners is low.

Timing of deer tag cuts questioned

This is in response to the article on Nevada Department of Wildlife and their suggestion of cutting the Deer Tag Quota for the upcoming season. First of all isn't it a coincidence that they decide to announce this after the April 22 tag application deadline? At least they got to collect all of the nonrefundable $10 fees. 1 am sure they could have looked at the harvest returns from last season and seen that the numbers were not there. They are worried about making their budget. If they were m...

Status of the Clark County Wilderness Legislation

It has been less than a year since the Nevada Wildlife Commission first heard about a move by the Friends of Nevada Wilderness to persuade Senators Reid and Ensign to introduce legislation, in this session of Congress, to establish more than 4 million acres of Southern Nevada as wilderness. The proposal was shocking on the heels of the recent designation of nearly 1.2 million acres within the Black Rock National Conservation Area and Wilderness in Northwestern Nevada, (see sidebar this page). Th...

NDOW CAUSES THE INHUMANE TREATMENT OF ANIMAL

On Friday November 9. 2001. the day before the sheep season opened in the area surrounding Las Vegas, I was accompanying a hunting companion on his sheep hunt and was doing some preseason scouting. It was about dark as we came over Sandy Valley Pass in Clark County. We pulled off the road where there were several vehicles with red lights flashing.

Predator Control: At Last!

Anyone who knows anything about wildlife matters in our state realizes that the Nevada Division of Wildlife (NDOW) is not going to do anything to bring back our game numbers. We have lost our sage hen, over 50% of our deer, and in some areas, our state animal the desert bighorn sheep.

EDITORIAL

So you went to a sportsmen's banquet, you know, one of those organizations who do good things for big game, fish or birds. You paid too much for a ticket but you were doing the right thing. You bought $100 worth of raffle tickets knowing you probably weren't going to win anything. Maybe you even paid $700 for a $500 gun in the auction. But you knew you were doing something good for hunting, but were you?

Some good legislative bills from the Wildlife Commission

When it comes to legislative bills to help sportsmen, the Wildlife Commissioners have been nonexistent for the last six legislative sessions, which amounts to 12 years. If they did anything at all, it was to rubberstamp NDOW's bills for more rules and regulations and higher fees. They also opposed good bills for sportsmen like putting two more sportsmen on the Wildlife Commission and having a fair big game tag draw.

LOOK AT THE BIG PICTURE!

It is the function of the Wildlife Commissioners to set policy for the Nevada Division of Wildlife (NDOW). This is a tough job to do when you arc appointed to the Wildlife Commission without the knowledge to handle this important task. The only way to gain this vital experience is to attend county advisory board and Wildlife Commission meetings before you are appointed to the Wildlife Commission. Classic examples of people who were appointed as sportsmen's representatives to the Wildlife Com...

Good News Bad News

Good news for Nevada sportsmen! HUNTER'S ALERT has been waiting to write a report like this for over 20 years. Sportsmen now have 5 (the majority) good Wildlife commissioners on the Board. A very nasty Wildlife Commission meeting was held on August 14 and 15 in Elko. The bighorn sheep people did everything they could to see that Gerald Lent was not re-elected as chairman. Thankfully, the sheep people were defeated.

Gerald Lent is in the process of forming a Mule Deer Task Force committee. The intent of this committee is to facilitate input from concerned deer hunters. For that reason, we are requesting that everyone with an idea or suggestion to bring back our deer to submit it to the committee chair, Scott Raine. He can be reached at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it or PO Box 812, Eureka, NV 89316.  All ideas will be considered and I can assure you that some will be presented to the Wildlife Commission for implementation.

Past and current directors and NDOW biologists have done nothing to bring back our deer so it is going to be up to this Wildlife Commission to implement some changes. At last the general public is going to have some direct input. Please pass this information on to your fellow hunters as the committee wants as many suggestions as possible.

Thank you for your support of HUNTER'S ALERT. We are working for ALL of the sportsmen of Nevada to preserve and protect our hunting heritage.

Listed below are recommendations sent to Commissioner Raine by HUNTER'S ALERT.

Dear Commissioner Raine:

HUNTER'S ALERT is pleased that someone with some authority has finally realized that we have lost our deer and actually wants to do something to address this loss. For that reason, HUNTER'S ALERT is listing five suggestions which we hope you will consider.

1.     Replace the current director with someone who wants to bring back our deer.

2.     Managing mountain lions is a state right. The mountain lion should be returned to predator status without any federal repercussions. The threat of withholding P-R money goes against the Tenth Amendment of the Constitution. P-R money should be given to states with no strings attached.

3.     If number 2 is unattainable, insure the objective harvest of mountain lions is accomplished every year.

4.     No killing of does until deer numbers are at 200,000 statewide.

5.     More emphasis on predator control.
