Editorial
There are good things in store for the future of Nevada sportsmen. NDOW has a new director, Ken Mayer who is concerned about the loss of our deer and the way the agency has been managed in the past. HUNTER’S ALERT bill AB259 did not pass in its original form but it came out a winner anyway. HUNTER’S ALERT sponsored a bill to audit NDOW in the previous legislative session. The results of the audit proved how badly NDOW was being mismanaged. Because this audit showed numerous misapprop...

We have a serious lion problem in our state. When is something going to be done about it?

We have lost the majority of our deer and the millions of dollars in revenue that go with that loss. In the 5 year period from 2001 to 2005, Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) has lost over $11 million in sales of deer licenses and tags. For over 25 years, NDOW and the Wildlife commissioners have closed their eyes to this problem.

Victory for sportsmen

In the last legislative session, HUNTER’S ALERT sponsored Assembly Bill 259. The intent of this bill was to save more deer by increasing the mountain lion harvest. This bill met with virulent opposition from every Wildlife Commissioner, some sportsmen, and especially from Larry Johnson and his Coalition for Nevada’s Wildlife. They flooded the Natural Resources, Agriculture and Mining committee with incorrect information. They were unaware that the bill had been already been amended t...

From Wildhorse Ranch Fax Sheet, August 5, 2007:
From Wildhorse Ranch Fax Sheet, August 5, 2007: The deer, elk and antelope appear to be in good shape. If the Bruneau Valley had been well grazed, the fire would not have spread up the river valley from Mink Ranch to Marge Prunty’s. Game and Fish must be held accountable for their riparian bullshit. Game and Fish should have watched 200 head of Ellison Ranch sheep burn to death.

Governor Jim Gibbons keeps his word!

Unlike the former governor, Governor Jim Gibbons is concerned about sportsmen’s issues, particularly the loss of our deer. The former governor appointed people to the Wildlife Commission who could donate large sums of money to him. Governor Jim Gibbons has made two appointments to the Wildlife Commission and based his appointments on individuals who have a solid knowledge of wildlife issues.  It is apparent that Governor Gibbons’ style of appointing wildlife commissioners is not...

“Common sense is very uncommon.”…Horace Greeley.  He must have been referring to Kenny Guinn’s appointments to the Wildlife Commission.

Predation, Water, Wildlife, and the Stewards of our Lands

Nevada - What goals should biologists be working towards? Nevada Department Of Wildlife (NDOW) Biologists need to work towards the goal of enhancing wildlife, not towards the goal of making work for themselves. Biologists do not need to be studying that which every biologist has studied since the beginning of time. The effects of predators on their prey are not in doubt. Every biologist does not need to re-invent the wheel. Lions, Coyotes, Ravens, Magpies, and all other predators hunt and kill e...

NDOW continues to sell out mule deer

There are three groups who could bring back our deer, the Wildlife Commissioners, the majority of our legislators, or Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW). None of them choose to do this. Let’s examine these groups and prove why they don’t care about Nevada’s once famous mule deer.

First, the Wildlife Commission. None of them have ever proposed any idea to even think about bringing back our deer. Quite the contrary. Wildlife Commissioner Clint Bentley, on two differen...

New NDOW director comes up with lion proposal

New NDOW director Ken Mayer has inherited a 30 year mess. This mess was created by the two former directors, Willie Molini and Terry Crawforth. Also helping to create the mess were the wildlife commissioners who were appointed by former governors Bob Miller and Kenny Guinn. These Wildlife commissioners had no guts to stand up to the former directors so they need to share the blame for the loss of our deer.

Corruption continues at NDOW - Presented to the Wildlife Commission February 10, 2007
In the 2005 legislative session, HUNTER’S ALERT and Nevada Hunters Association sponsored a bill to audit a very small part of Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW). The bill passed with the help of Assemblyman Jerry Claborn. Jerry realized how badly NDOW was being mismanaged for many years. Getting the bill passed was not easy as NDOW had their favorite puppet, Larry Johnson there testifying against the bill. Larry’s feeble excuse was that NDOW couldn’t afford the audit. As usua...

Presented to the Assembly Natural Resource Committee March 28, 2007
My name is Cecil Fredi and I have lived in Las Vegas for 64 years. For many of those years, I deer hunted and everyone in the hunting group took home a nice big buck. Those days have been gone for years. Nineteen years ago, I helped form a group called HUNTER’S ALERT. Our primary purpose was to inform sportsmen that we have a predator problem and that something needed to be done about it. We have mailed 31 newsletters resulting in over a quarter of a million copies distributed throughout t...

A Wildlife Commissioner still in the fog

For five years, HUNTER’S ALERT has proved to our readers that Clint Bentley should never have been appointed to the Wildlife Commission. We hate to have to keep proving this, but when Clint Bentley keeps giving us more proof, we will just have to keep presenting it.

HUNTER’S ALERT Right again!
We hate to continue using this for the title of an article. But as long as the Wildlife commissioners and NDOW keep furnishing us with the material, HUNTER’S ALERT will continue to print it. HUNTER’S ALERT has stated many times that it doesn’t do any good to attend a County Advisory Board meeting or a Wildlife Commission meeting.

Wildlife commissioners still don’t get it!

To paraphrase the old cliché, you can lead a jackass to water, but you can’t make him drink is clearly appropriate for most of the Wildlife commissioners. When the commissioners don’t know what to do, which is on a regular basis, they form a committee. One of the 12 committees is the Legislative Committee.

Assemblyman Jerry Claborn survey results

For those of you who believe all politicians are no good, you are wrong. With that said, let’s pat some good ones on the back and expose a couple who have proven that they could care less about sportsmen’s concerns. In the last legislative session, Assemblymen Jerry Claborn and John Carpenter were instrumental in getting HUNTER’S ALERT bill AB259 passed. They are the true champions of sportsmen!

Man saves 53 sheep from dying

You would think that a person who saved 53 Desert bighorn sheep from dying would be waiting for a commendation for doing a good job. Not so! He is waiting for the government to give him a citation. He has asked us not to disclose his name yet because of possible court proceedings.

Lions, Coyotes, Ravens, Magpies, and all other predators hunt and kill every animal they can, including those yet to be born. Those Fangs and Claws are made for killing, and that’s just what they will do. Studies to determine the age of the predator population and attempts to harvest the “older more experienced killers” who many NDOW biologists blame for a greater part of predation are irrelevant and not useful. Perhaps it may be true that older predators kill more of some population than younger ones, but so what? The next generation is in training and is killing something. They are eating, and they will be the new experienced killers in the length of time it takes to complete a study.
