Each legislative session, hundreds of bills are introduced and many eventually become Nevada law. The challenge is for each legislator to get up-to-date on these issues as quickly as possible. While all legislators bring a vast background of experience, it's impossible to have all the background necessary in all the areas needed and that's where you become very important to the process of assuring good government.
Let me give you a positive, firsthand experience which should hit home within your own organization. As a new Assemblyman in 1991, I had the opportunity to participate in enacting legislation pertaining to the independent draw for game tags. For years hunters had lodged concerns but it took a concentrated effort to enact those changes. Not being a hunter, this was truly an issue in which I needed help. Lucky for me, I encountered Gerald Lent and Harry Pappas, two very astute lobbyists, who helped me understand your side of the story. It was that information that allowed me to support your position throughout the development of that legislation. Without the views of citizens such as Gerald and Harry, h would be impossible to conduct open, informative hearings. It may seem like a small thing but your voice and your vote do count. Ask anyone in 1991 and you'll know how important they both are because that legislation was hard fought and reflected a narrow victory. My advice is to learn who represents you in the Assembly and the Senate and let them know who you are and what your interests are. During the Session, a toll-free number allows you to speak with your representative - or, you can still get through with a 29-cent stamp. When the Session's over, you can make contact with a local call. It's your government, and you can make a difference!
