The Foundation would like to inform its members on the status of the Nevada 1996 auction sheep tag. The Nevada tag will not be auctioned at our 19th annual convention. New legislation was passed in July of 1995, that greatly affects how the revenue generated by this permit will be allocated for wild sheep in the state of Nevada.
This recent legislation requires that all monies raised from all special wildlife tags (including wild sheep) must be deposited in a special state trust account, with only the interest earned from this trust to be allocated for all wildlife management programs in Nevada. The Foundation's policy for special sheep auction permits clearly states that all revenue returned from a state, province or Governor's sheep tag must be used exclusively for wild sheep conservation and management programs within that state or province. Since this management policy no longer applies to Nevada, we were not selected to market their 1996 tag. Until the current legislation changes we must abide by FNAWS permit policy and not market this permit. With the understanding that our main objective of offering these special tags for auction is to raise the highest amount of revenue possible for the wild sheep of North America. We hope that in the future Nevada legislation will be changed and we can once again market this exclusive hunting opportunity, and contribute to the future of wild sheep in the great state of Nevada. • Reprinted from Foundation for North American Wild Sheep Newsletter, Winter, 1996 issue
