Well, guess what, good old Nevada Division of Wildlife and the Wildlife Commission are trying to do it to the sportsmen again. They are going to have a bill in the next legislative session to let the Wildlife Commission set tag and license fees. Currently, it takes the majority of the assembly, the majority of the senate and the governor to increase fees. This represents 34 elected officials. If Nevada Division of Wildlife and the Wildlife Commission had their way, it would only require the majority of the Wildlife Commission or five appointed people. We have no recourse with appointees. In the last legislative session, Nevada Division of Wildlife drafted a bill, A.B.212, which increased our hunting and fishing licenses. This bill was almost defeated in the assembly. The governor sent out a press release on June 28, 1995 stating, "The state simply won't be able to afford to fully stock Lake Mead, Lake Mohave, Walker Lake, and a number of other popular Nevada fishing sites. Without game surveys, the Division of Wildlife will not have the necessary information to determine the appropriate number of tags to be issued to hunters."
Talk about hogwash. No wonder this guy is Bill Clinton's friend! I ask the fishermen -- Are these lakes fully stocked? I ask the hunters - When we have 3% fewer deer than last year and an increase of 34% in tags, was that the necessary information you hunters paid for from license increases from A.B.212? We don't need any more excuses, lies, or fabrications from government employees. We don't need the Wildlife Commission setting our fees. It is not a secret Nevada Division of Wildlife has been mismanaged for years. Last October, Nevada Division of Wildlife was $190,000 overdrawn (a state violation). Again last June, $198,940 in another overdraw. Because of years of mismanagement in the Nevada Division of Wildlife, we already have some of the highest hunting license and tag fees in the west. Have you any idea what it would cost to go hunting in Nevada if this bill were to pass? Sure, there will always be people who will pay no matter what the cost. But when you price the majority of people out of the sport you lose your masses, and that is when the anti's get you. When there is no one to stick up for hunters, there will be no one hunting. This is the direction that the Wildlife Commission and NDOW are heading. For those of you who see or talk to your assemblyman or senator, tell them what is going on. Tell them because of years of mismanagement and the desperate need for funding, Nevada Division of Wildlife and the Wildlife Commission want this bill passed. Also, remind them it is a slap in their faces because the legislators lose their ability to regulate.
