Another Bad Appointment to the Wildlife Commission PDF Print E-mail

It is the governor who makes the appointments to the Wildlife Commission. But Kenny Guinn relied on current commissioners for their suggestions on a nominee. It resulted in appointing Clint Bentley who was not the most qualified person. The person most qualified for this post was Wilford Allen.

Let's compare the two candidates. Wilford Allen served on the Clark County Advisory Board to Manage Wildlife for twelve years, six of them as chairman. For years, he requested NDOW do something about our serious predator problem. For years, he made everyone aware of the terrible state of the Overton Wildlife

Management Area. In other words, Wilford Allen stood up to NDOW for the sportsmen of Nevada on many occasions.

Let's see how Clint Bentley has stood up to NDOW. As president of the Fraternity of the Desert Bighorn he convinced the organization to donate $10,000 to NDOW for re-seeding. Never should anyone give any money to any government agency. That is why we have taxes. In addition, NDOW is a state agency that has been mismanaged for years and you give them money? For what? For a giant brownnose effort, that's what.

As stated, Wilford Allen wanted something done about predators. Not so for Clint Bentley.

Last session, HUNTER'S ALERT sponsored a bill which would have reclassified the mountain lion back to a predator status like the coyote. At a Clark County Wildlife Advisory Board meeting, ) Clint Bentley opposed this stating that we have a Mountain Lion Management Plan and that is all we need. Well, Mr. Bentley last fiscal year (2001-2002), a grand whopping total of 194 mountain lions were harvested using this wonderful Mountain Lion Management Plan in which you have so much faith.

In order to reduce the number of lions by a few more than 194 per year, HUNTER'S ALERT has a proposal that everyone who buys a hunting license would have a validation spot on the license for the taking of a mountain lion. When asked about this, Clint Bentley stated "We will be losing money." Who is the "we" that Mr. Bentley refers to, the sportsmen of Nevada or is he speaking for NDOW? Who does he represent? Can you believe Mr. Bentley's ignorance? We have lost millions in deer revenue and he is worried about losing a few bucks on mountain lions! It's because of the mountain lions and other predators that the deer are disappearing along with the millions in revenue generated by the sale of licenses and tags.

When a person draws a sheep tag, by law that person must attend an indoctrination course relating to bighorn sheep. Upon

completion of the course, the tag will be issued to the hunter. The only excuse for missing the course is due to an emergency. In 1999 Clint Bentley's buddy Larry Johnson drew a sheep tag and refused to go to the indoctrination. Realizing that Mr. Johnson was not going to get his tag without the mandatory indoctrination, Administrator Crawforth violated policy to give Mr. Bentley's buddy a "special indoctrination". When this violation was made public at a Clark County Advisory Board to Manage Wildlife meeting, Clint Bentley's response was "He thought it was a good will gesture". Oh, Mr. Bentley, when the head of NDOW violates a policy for your friend, it is ok. Sure it is if you are in the business of sucking up to NDOW.

Clint Bentley replaced Jelindo Tiberti on the Wildlife Commission. Jelindo Tiberti donated thousands of dollars to the governor. Clint Bentley donated $8000 to the current gubernatorial race. Jelindo Tiberti during his ten years on the Wildlife Commission didn't think we had a predator problem. In addition, he aligned himself continually with whatever NDOW wanted. Does anyone see any similarity between Jelindo Tiberti and Clint Bentley?

In summary, Clint Bentley has shown that he wants nothing done about lions. He won't represent sportsmen against NDOW and he bought his way on the Wildlife Commission and it's okay for the NDOW adminstrator to break the law as long as it is for a friend. Oh, Mr. Bentley will be a wonderful Wildlife Commissioner.
