As the old saying goes, for every action there is a reaction. Sportsmen enjoy a fair big game tag draw. Why? Who is responsible for the Nevada Duck Stamp? We have more sportsmen on the Wildlife Commission than we have ever had. At last, there is money for predator control. Who is responsible for this? These good things for sportsmen did not happen all by themselves. All of these actions and many more that have helped hunters are because of Gerald Lent. It all started in 1978 when Reno optometrist Gerald Lent became involved in the legislative process. He has been to every legislative session since then fighting for hunters. It proves the old adage that one person can make a difference and never was it so evident as it was during the last legislative session.
Assemblyman Jerry Clabora introduced Assembly Bill 291. The purpose of this bill was to get some money for long overdue predator control. While we certainly praise and appreciate the efforts of Assemblyman Claborn, we feel that credit also needs to be given to a longtime champion of hunters in our state. Currently there is a radio ad that states that Jerry Claborn, "without help from anyone" obtained the funds for predator control. Nothing could be further from the truth. Gerry Lent made at least a dozen trips from Reno to Carson City to support this bill. During one of Gerry Lent's testimonies, he produced a survey showing seventy percent of the sportsmen wanted to implement predator control. It was due to Gerry Lent's efforts working with Assemblyman Claborn that the bill passed. Gerry Lent does not receive accolades and honors at sportsmen's banquets for his many years of hard work. That's not what he wants. What he wants is more game, more accountability by NDOW and the future of hunting not to be in jeopardy. Let's give credit where credit is due. Sportsmen would not enjoy many of the benefits we have in our state today if it weren't for Gerald Lent. I can assure you that not one other person in the state has spent more of their own time and money for the future of hunters and hunting in the state of Nevada than Gerald Lent..... Gerald Lent can be reached at Nevada Hunters Association, PO Box 50757, Reno, NV 89513.
