- Vote NO on Question 1.
Governor: Kenny Guinn is going to win the election. Prior to his first term, he made a commitment to straighten out NDOW. He hasn't done it. He was going to help get some bills passed for sportsmen. He hasn't done it. However, he still has a chance to redeem himself in the next legislative session and we still have faith that he will. He made a commitment to appoint Gerry Lent to the Wildlife Commission. He didn't do it. He did appoint Brad Quilici, Tommy Ford and J.T. Moran. However, three on a board of nine are not going to get NDOW headed in the right direction. The governor said that if you have been on a board for two terms and haven't solved the problem, you are part of the problem. HUNTER'S ALERT agrees. However, Bill Bradley had been on the Commission for two terms, did nothing to straighten out NDOW and the governor reappointed him. Lieutenant Governor: To sportsmen, this may not seem like an important position. However, this office is used as a stepping stone for the governorship and that makes it really important. When Lorraine Hunt was a Clark County commissioner, HUNTER'S ALERT called her regarding appointments to the Clark County Advisory Board to Manage Wildlife. She failed to return any calls or respond to any of our correspondence. When she ran for lieutenant governor, again HUNTER'S ALERT made many calls to her campaign headquarters. All we wanted to know was that she supported hunting and was pro-gun and HUNTER'S ALERT would have supported her. Again, no response from her. If she doesn't respond to sportsmen as a county commissioner or as a candidate for lieutenant governor, we certainly don't need to think about her as our governor in four years. Representative in Congress, District One: Shelley Berkley will win this post. It is too bad because sportsmen have had no representation from her. Quite the opposite. She has voted against most of the National Rifle Association's proposals twelve of thirteen times and accepted money from anti-gun organizations. Representative in Congress, District Two: Jim Gibbons is a life member of the NRA, a hunter, and has always backed sportsmen's and land use issues. Our fervent wish is that someday he will be our governor. Representative in Congress, District Three: Last January, HUNTER'S ALERT president Cecil Fredi met with candidate Dario Herrera regarding the proposed shooting range in Clark County. Dario made promises he didn't keep and that should be an indicator of things to come should he be elected to Congress. State Controller: This is an office that doesn't have a major impact on sportsmen. The current controller, Kathy Augustine, had a bill passed (AB314) in the 2001 Legislative Session which helps NDOW collect debts. In addition, when she served as both senator and in the assembly, she supported hunters and gun owners. John Lee has equally supported hunters and gun owners in the assembly. In addition, he was helpful in getting a resolution passed on the proposed shooting range in Clark County. It is a shame that sportsmen are going to lose one of these fine candidates. Attorney General: Dear HUNTER'S ALERT: I have reviewed the material you have provided me with on a former Nevada Division of Wildlife administrator. If ever any individual commits crimes as a state employee, I, as Attorney General, will ensure they will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. When I am Attorney General, I will commit the necessary resources to protect the citizens of our rural communities. As Attorney General 1 have only one client, the citizens of the state of Nevada. These citizens are from Stateline to Jackpot, not just Reno, Las Vegas and Carson City. I would also like to let your members know how I feel about land use. I believe our Nevada land should be used but not abused. The public should not be locked out or forced out because of overzealous government employees. The commitment I am going to pledge to your members and the sportsmen of Nevada is that I will not desert them. HUNTER'S ALERT has a record of accomplishment and I am hopeful of receiving the endorsement of this organization. Sincerely, John Hunt Candidate for Attorney General District Court Department 14: Normally HUNTER'S ALERT does not endorse political candidates who do not directly affect sportsmen's issues. However, in the case of incumbent Judge Donald Mosley, sportsmen have no better friend. He has been and is on numerous boards of directors of sportsmen's organizations. If there were such a thing as King of Sportsmen's Banquets, he would wear the crown. He supports all of the organizations. Now it's time for all of the sportsmen to support him. Question 1: This would give Nevada Division of Wildlife $27 million to acquire property. In 1990, Question 5 was passed and NDOW received millions to purchase property. They bought the Kent Howard Ranch and destroyed it. They bought the 3C Ranch and are in the process of destroying it. NDOW doesn't need to be rewarded further for bad management. Remember, any loss of land is a loss of hunting opportunities. Most importantly, look at who will be backing this measure. All the "green" organizations like Nature Conservancy which has purchased millions of acres of land and then allow no hunter access. Wake up, sportsmen. Know who your friends are and recognize your enemies.
