1. NDOW excuses are up to ten and the number is rising for the decline of our deer but none of the excuses include predators.
2. Immediately after Terry Crawforth’s appointment, HUNTER’S ALERT asked him, “Can you bring our deer back without doing any predator control?” His answer was “no”. Five years later, this proves two things. He does not want to do anything to bring our deer herds back and he hasn’t or will not implement any predator management. 3. The current Wildlife commissioners are just as much to blame as NDOW. They were responsible for gutting AB41. In its original form, the Wildlife commissioners could have insisted that money be provided for predator management before the Wildlife Commission approved NDOW’s budget. Leading the charge for selling out the sportsmen were none other than Sportsmen’s representative Bill Bradley, Sportsmen’s representative Tommy Ford and John Moran. 4. During the last legislative session, HUNTER’S ALERT went to Carson City and spent two hours reviewing NDOW’s budget. NDOW’s $7 million fee increases did not have one penny allotted for predator management. 5. From the outset, NDOW has been opposed to this program. Their initial removal of 24 percent of the funding for support should have been an indication that NDOW was not going to endorse predator management of any type. 6. On numerous occasions, the Predator subcommittee wanted NDOW to hire a full time trapper. The trapper’s expenses would be paid for by the $3 predator fee. NDOW refused. 7. In the 2003-2004 Big Game Status Book, Terry Crawforth states “I feel it is timely and important for sportsmen and the interested public to become involved with the mule deer management planning effort that we will be taking to the public in late summer, 2004.” Can you believe this? Terry Crawforth has had the job for five years and now he wants to have a plan for our mule deer. Terry Crawforth should not only be fired, he never should have been hired. It has now taken Terry Crawfoth five years to act on a serious problem.
