Since our first newsletter over seven years ago, we have printed sportsmen's comments. Of course, during this lime NDOW and the Wildlife commissioners have refused to act on their concerns. HUNTER'S ALERT will continue to print them until someone starts listening.

SPORTSMEN SPEAK OUT ... AND KEEP ON SPEAKING

NDOW and the wildlife commissioners would like everyone to think that there are only one or two sportsmen who do not approve of the way our game is being managed. Nothing could be further from the truth. Former Wildlife Commission chairman Mahlon Brown used to refer to HUNTER'S ALHRT as the "small but vocal group". NDOW in their publication, Nevada Wildlife Almanac, referred to a "vocal sliver" of Nevada's hunters who opposed giving our sheep to Texas. HUNTER'S ALERT gets literally hundreds of letters, calls, or comments about NDOW's mismanagement. Listed below are but a few

SPORTSMEN SPEAK!!! Summer 1996

Can thousands of sportsmen in our state be wrong about the Nevada Division of Wildlife? HUNTER'S ALERT doesn't think so. Below are a few of the comments we have received since our last newsletter.

Published in HA Newsletter 12

New NDOW director Ken Mayer has inherited a 30 year mess. This mess was created by the two former directors, Willie Molini and Terry Crawforth. Also helping to create the mess were the wildlife commissioners who were appointed by former governors Bob Miller and Kenny Guinn. These Wildlife commissioners had no guts to stand up to the former directors so they need to share the blame for the loss of our deer.

For a hunter or gun owner in our state, no election has been as important as this year’s gubernatorial race. For the last eighteen years, Nevada sportsmen have been A.W.O.L. (absent without leave) when it comes to having a governor who cares about sportsmen’s issues. For ten years, Bob Miller and for eight years, Kenny Guinn totally neglected sportsmen’s issues. As bad as they were, by electing Dina Titus it will get a lot worse.

The people in Bud Sonnentag’s article, “Ten people who have screwed up hunting in Nevada”, are the reason we have lost the majority of our deer. In addition, they are responsible for the mess that has been created in Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW). All of the people Bud listed were in a position to make NDOW a better agency. They had the power to do this but they chose not to.

The question is “Why”? Was it stupidity, selfishness or power? Was it not caring or being protected by an elected official? Each of these individuals failed the sportsmen in their own way. Let’s review them and see what category they fell into.

Number 1: Willie Molini. He was being protected by Governor Bob Miller and Senator Bill Raggio. For this reason he could do whatever he wanted and nothing (like termination) was going to happen to him. He was right.

Number 2: Governor Bob Miller. The former governor should go in the “care less” category. He could care less about sportsmen’s concerns. If it wasn’t a basketball, it wasn’t
considered a sport to him.

Number 3: Terry Crawforth. Another individual who could be placed in the “care less” category. He could not have cared less about the Game Bureau. All that mattered to him was more law enforcement.

Number 4: Governor Kenny Guinn. Strictly power. As governor no one is going to do anything to him other than print the truth about his not caring about sportsmen’s issues.

Number 5: Senator Bill Raggio. Absolutely the worst abuse of power an individual could have. His attitude was “ to hell with everyone and everything. I‘m the lord and master.” To sportsmen, he was the supreme bad politician.

Currently there is a best-selling book by Bernard Goldberg titled One Hundred People who are Screwing up America. The book names these people and the destruction they have done. Playing on this theme, it occurred to me, why not let all Nevadans, especially sportsmen, know who screwed up this state’s wonderful deer herd by exposing the corrupt public officials who were and are responsible. Through research and investigation I have settled on these following ten as the most notorious culprits of destruction.

Action Item #3 would prohibit hunting for a 96 hour period after using aircraft to locate wildlife.

This request by NDOW has to be the most overkill idea they have come up with in a long time. The hierarchy of NDOW must have a lot of time on their hands. In Alaska you cannot hunt on the same day that you fly. It is probably safe to say that 95% of the hunters in Alaska must utilize aircraft. What percentage of Nevada hunters utilize aircraft'1 Probably a tenth of one percent. Alaska, which has a hell of a lot more game to protect says no same-day hunting. So Nevada wants no hunting for four days. This is a pure and simple law enforcement mentality. NDOW does not know how or refuses to bring back our big game numbers. All they know is more law enforcement. We already have 140 ways to cite sportsmen and apparently it is not enough law 1enforcement for NDOW. This is like gun Control. We have thousands of gun laws and they want more.
