Thank you, Humboldt, Eureka and Lander Counties

For those of you who think all politicians are tnahe same, this article should change your opinion. In the 2001 legislative session, HUNTER’S ALERT sponsored Assembly Bill 494. This bill would have given NDOW a boss, something they didn’t have under the jurisdiction of the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. There were many other benefits for sportsmen in this bill as well. Any legislative wildlife bill that originates in the Assembly must go to the Natural Resources Committee.

TIME FOR A CHANGE

It just hasn't worked and we need to return to a Department of Fish and Game. During the 1993 legislative session, former Governor Bob Miller consolidated state agencies. This has proven disastrous to the sportsmen in the state of Nevada. Since consolidation, Nevada Division of Wildlife (NDOW) has been one of nine state agencies put under the umbrella of the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. Its director is Pete Morros. There is not a single person who can do the job efficiently for nine state agencies. And Pete Morros has proven this many times over.

Politics Picks New NDOW Administrator

Not one sportsmen's organization in the state endorsed Terry Crawforth to replace Willie Molini as administrator of the Nevada Division of Wildlife (NDOW). Even the Wildlife commissioners rated him third in a three horse race. How did he get chosen? It was good old politics at its worst.

NDOW STILL HAS HANDS IN BIG GAME DRAW!

In 1989, the legislature removed the big game tag draw from the control of Nevada Division of Wildlife. This was done because of many improprieties while under NDOW's jurisdiction. The sportsmen of our state wanted this and our legislators passed it.

And The Farmer Hauled Another Load of Hay

(You could tell by the smell that it wasn't hay!)

No one really praises the Nevada Division of Wildlife other than those people who receive favors from the Division. It is for this reason that NDOW created their own intradepartmental publication called "Wild Side". In the January-February 1998 issue, one of the feature stories was "Administrator to Retire" by Dave Rice. We all know the administrator. Willie Molini, the person responsible for the destruction of our game. Dave Rice is the conservation/education chief. He wrote the following interview asking Administrator Willie Molini the questions. He stated that Willie Molini's answers to the questions were in an unedited form Now really, do you believe that? Willie is his boss. At any rate, HUNTER'S ALERT wants to comment on some of the responses by Administrator Molini

THE 1997 LEGISLATIVE SESSION

THE GOOD: SENATE BILL 127 • THE BAD: GOVERNOR MILLER • THE UGLY: POLITICS

Senate Bill 127 was requested by HUNTER'S ALERT for a bill draft almost a year before the 1997 legislative session was to begin. One of the most important parts of this bill was that all county advisory boards to manage wildlife would submit nominations to the governor of qualified people for appointment to the Wildlife Commission. The governor would then be required to select from these lists. Knowledgeable people who have attended county advisory board and Wildlife Commission meetings would then have a chance to be appointed to the Commission. These are people who have donated their time without pay or perks involved. People who know fish and game issues, not just who know the governor. This is grass roots government - for the people -by the people.

ARE ALL GOVERNMENT AGENCIES MISMANAGED?

It all started in February, 1979 when my hunting partner, taxidermist Hagan Thompson and I returned from a very enjoyable African safari. Hagan's taxidermy shop was a one man operation so he had a young man watching his shop while we were on safari. Upon his return, the part-time employee notified Hagan that while he was away, two game wardens, one from the U. S. Fish & Wildlife Service, and one from Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) came to the shop and seized his record book and skins.
