SPORTSMEN SPEAK!!! Summer 1996
Can thousands of sportsmen in our state be wrong about the Nevada Division of Wildlife? HUNTER'S ALERT doesn't think so. Below are a few of the comments we have received since our last newsletter.
Sportsmen Speak But Wildlife Commission and NDOW Fail to Listen!
“I sure appreciate your good work. We need to do full battle against these morons.” J.G., Las Vegas
“Thanks for your efforts!” A.S., Henderson
“Keep up the good work!” H.P., Moapa, J.H., Carson City, R.F., Las Vegas, V.E., Las Vegas, G.K., Las Vegas, D. & D. C., Reno
“Wildlife Commission sucks.” D.C., Reno
“Just read your Fall 2003 publication. I can’t believe my eyes!! I’m a 50 year Nevada resident; what can I do to help our cause?” K.I., Reno
“Keep up the good work” “NDOW director makes too much money. I also have been applying for Nevada elk 26 years and mountain goat 26 years. Something wrong with bonus point system.” R.G., Hawthorne
“I am very angry with NDOW over the rancher in Mina named Bob Eddy. They (NDOW) should be cited for their illegal activities! NDOW has way too much authority and should be more regulated and better managed. Keep up the good work and please keep us informed on all their activities.” J.M., Fallon
We have a serious lion problem in our state. When is something going to be done about it?
We have lost the majority of our deer and the millions of dollars in revenue that go with that loss. In the 5 year period from 2001 to 2005, Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) has lost over $11 million in sales of deer licenses and tags. For over 25 years, NDOW and the Wildlife commissioners have closed their eyes to this problem.
Assemblyman Jerry Claborn survey results
For those of you who believe all politicians are no good, you are wrong. With that said, let’s pat some good ones on the back and expose a couple who have proven that they could care less about sportsmen’s concerns. In the last legislative session, Assemblymen Jerry Claborn and John Carpenter were instrumental in getting HUNTER’S ALERT bill AB259 passed. They are the true champions of sportsmen!
CRISIS FOR HUNTERS!
It is just about as simple as it can be. Take away your land and you lose the opportunity to go hunting. This is exactly what is going to happen if Harry Reid is re-elected to the U.S. Senate. You see. Harry Reid is a wilderness freak. In 1989. Harry Reid was instrumental in assuring that Nevada had 733. 400 acres of Forest Service wilderness crammed down then throats He is not going to stop there
LIVING LEGENDS
(A Pitiful Tale of Waste and Deception)
Nevada's wild horses are descendants of domestic horses that either escaped or someone turned loose. Contrary to popular and misguided belief, wild horses arc not native to Nevada. However, in a fit of divine intervention, our infinitely wise congress declared these feral creatures to be wild. Congress also required the bureaucrats to manage horses as an integral part of the natural system. Here are some interesting tidbits obtained from BLM (Bureau of Land Management) records. From 1973 to 1995, BLM spent over $214.000.000 (yes. million) administering the wild horse and burro program. From 1973 to 1993, BLM spent 58% ($93,500,000) of the wild horse budget on un-adoptable horses housed in feedlots. Most disturbing is BLM's overhead cost rose from 11% in 1985 to 32% in 1995.
GREAT IDEAS THAT WILL NEVER HAPPEN
. ..There are approximately 40,000 wild horses in the U.S. Let each state have 800!
. ..Government employees can be fired for overstepping their bounds or running roughshod over American citizens.
DID YOU KNOW
When Governor Miller took office, Willie Molini's salary was $50,728. Today it is $58,204. His assistant, Terry Crawforth makes $55,801. Ed. note: Willie's raise certainly couldn't have been based on the merit system!
...In 1990, 18% of Nevada Department of Wildlife's budget was spent on non-game. This year it will be 25.82%!
...At one time, New Zealand had so many game animals that there were no seasons, licenses, or limits. WHY? They hadn't hunted them for 40 years and there were no predators.
HUNTERS, ITS TIME TO UNITE!
Since HUNTER'S ALERT was founded we have informed our readers about the strong antihunting movement One group, PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) has over a quarter million members. This alone should scare you. They are only one of many antihunting groups who will not quit until all hunting has been stopped.
Sportsman of the Quarter
Because of involvement in civic responsibilities for most of my adult life, 1 had very little time for one of my favorite pastimes, hunting. However, when time permitted, I enjoyed hunting in Nevada for over 30 years and have many fond memories of these trips.
I feel strongly that hunters must be able to have controlled hunting while not endangering any species. Overkill and overprotection are both practices which are detrimental to all species. A good example of overprotection is the wild horse and burro. Because they are wild, their numbers need to be stabilized as are deer, antelope and other wild animals. With total protection, their numbers increase to the point that they damage their range and diminish their food supply. By not overkilling or overprotecting, there will always be a healthy herd of wild horses and burros.
